Landscape design
Gardens built for heat: landscape design that carries through Ribeirão Preto's dry season
The landscape world has chosen its theme for 2026: resilience. The leading publications in the field all point the same way: gardens of native and well-adapted species that ask for less water and less maintenance, and give back more shade, more life and more comfort. For those who design in Ribeirão Preto, the trend has a particular flavour: here, it was never a fashion. It is a design condition.
What the Ribeirão Preto climate asks for
Our climate is generous and demanding in equal measure: strong sun all year round, intense heat and a well-marked dry season, usually from May to September. A garden designed for another climate suffers here: it depends on constant irrigation, loses vigour in August and ages poorly. A garden conceived for this territory does the opposite: it crosses the dry season beautifully and ends the year better than it began.
Planting in layers: the shade that protects the garden
The most important strategy is not a species, it is a structure. Layered planting (canopy, mid-height and ground cover) creates a microclimate: the trees filter the sun and protect what lives beneath them, the mid layer holds moisture, the ground cover shields the soil and reduces evaporation. The same design that protects the planting cools the house: a well-placed canopy to the west changes the temperature of an entire room at the end of the day.
Water as design, not as rescue
In a resilient garden, water is designed along with everything else: drip irrigation in zones, watering the root and not the leaf; permeable paving that returns the rain to the soil; and rain gardens, one of the strongest trends of the year, which turn the summer's excess into reserve and planting bed instead of runoff.
High-end means resilience with beauty
In the end, that is what high-end landscape design is about: not the fullest garden, but the most intelligent one, beautiful in January and still beautiful in August. It is what we design for every home, condominium and development, as in Bordas do Parque, from Ribeirão Preto to Brazil's many climates.
